NEWTON IN YOGA AND LIFE.
My yoga teacher often stresses on equal and opposite forces.
Pull your top thighs into their sockets,
push your heels down and ground them.
Pull your forearms back, stick your wrists out.
Equal and opposite forces to bear your weight,
so your spine doesn’t have to.
I think about this a lot.
Like when my mother moved into a new house,
and my father moved out of his.
I think about the time I got married
the same year they separated.
How do you celebrate and grieve at the same time?
Is this why happiness and sadness
sometimes have the same response: to cry?
My yoga teacher tells us, “Pay attention.
What you do on the mat, you do in life.”
I gather all my strength and remind myself.
Equal and opposite forces.
Laugh as loudly as you cry.
Love as much as you let go.
So the weight is off your back.
